Reflection

From the text I leanred that software piracy is out of control. When there's a wonderful software program that makes life easier and not enough software to go around in the classroom. I can honetly understand how it would be tempting to make copies. Especially when you're feeling the pressure to get a skill taught or a project completed. However, if I were the individual that authored the program I would not want someone making additional copies of all my hard work to supply to everyone. This is absolutely not fair to the individual that has worked so hard to produce a successful product. I thoroughly understand the importance of copyright laws and why they are so important to protect an individual's hard work. Personally, I have never known anyone to  copy software, but I can see that this would be a bad example for kids to practice this.

Identity theft is very troubling also. Realizing that there are so many criminals out there constantly seeking to steal your name and numbers. The fact that our text says that biometric devices such as checking our identity through fingerprints or our eyes (retinas) is all very interesting. I can honestly see with the rise in theft where our society is moving int this realm quite rapidly. I think it's sad. I know I have experienced the Trojan Horse virus on my computer this summer. This has not been at all fun. I'm really glad that I do not have my finances, credit card information and social security attached in my computer. I've tried to be extra cautious.

I think our administrators need to be informing teachers more about copyright laws. I believe teachers need to be reminded what the law says about these issues. As with any law, so many of them change over time. Or as changes occur, we need to be informed and reminded of them often. As educators in the classroom, we need to be teaching our students why we do not plagiarize or copy other people's work. Students even at a young age could appreciate the fact if they wrote a book and published it, they would not want someone to copy their book and say that it was their book first. I think we have a responsibility to bring these issues to their attention and on a level that they can relate to.

At my school we are constantly being warned about copyright issues with testing materials. Since we are an at-risk school, we want to be above board in every way possible. Our school does a good job of posting the copyright law above every computer and on the bulletin boards in the lounge. I thin a constant reminder is a good thing.
